Dead Ahead Wiki

Psychos logo Austin is a bank robber armed with a burst-fire machine pistol with an extended magazine, and dressed in a white office shirt with a black tie, an American flag print clown mask, blue gloves, and black pants. He carries a black duffel bag strapped on his back.

Police logo Collector is Austin's first exclusive skin. He is armed with a burst-fire machine pistol with an extended magazine, and dressed in a black jacket with shoulder insignias, black pants with gray side lines, a brown belt with a gray buckle, and a face shield with a black head strap and gray logo. He carries a marked black duffel bag strapped on his back.

Functionality[]

Basics[]

Although he is a human unit, his price is valued in rage points instead of courage.

He is a psycho, but unlike the remaining ones, his general behavior is comparable to other shooters.

Austin boasts rather unremarkable stats, with low health, base ranged damage, and fast movement speed. Notably, his Charisma and Valor are severely lacking. His rage cost is also high, although his preparation time is unusually short. He fires his gun in three-round bursts up to four times before performing a fast reload. In close quarters, he does a very weak melee attack.

Some time after dying, Austin will turn into Tipsy.

Perks and Abilities[]

Austin has a high-rate-of-fire perk, allowing him to shoot his weapon in quick bursts.

Austin has a unique special perk that grants him a chance to produce a small amount of coins (10-25) for every enemy killed by him, either in ranged or melee combat. He has to specifically land the last hit for each enemy to register. His ability has a limit of 100 uses per mission, at which point the player is effectively left to either finish the stage or quit. Austin has a potential max of 2500 coins per level, but typically averages at 1750 coins, and only 1000 coins at the absolute lowest. As the coins Austin collects are added to the player's storage immediately, they are kept regardless if the player wins, loses, or leaves the mission. This perk is disabled in events, Skirmish, and supply run.

At level 13, Austin's special ability can be unlocked, increasing the chances of him obtaining coins on kill. While the large amount of power points required to upgrade the unit to this point will be a hurdle, the increased coin collection chance makes Austin more efficient at what he does and allows for more currency to be earned per level than before. While the benefits are great for more effective coin farming and more quickly upgrading or purchasing items, it does nothing to improve any of Austin's stats or fighting capabilities, further isolating him into his one specific use. However, when used as intended, this special ability can prove to be a financially-lucrative investment in the long run.

Gameplay[]

Main Campaign[]

After sending weak courage units to gather the rage for him, Austin should be the sole unit on the battlefield in order to maximize coin farming potential, as when properly equipped, he will quickly compensate for his cost. The coins earned will greatly aid players in upgrading the bus and other units, or buy and craft items in Trader's Military Kit Shop, all of which can be prohibitively expensive otherwise due to the scarcity of money in general. His income is a huge help, able to cover even the most expensive price tags and also enables purchases that players usually wouldn't be able to pay for, such as the important buff items in shops, and can make all the difference when necessary. He is best used in missions with massive amounts of very weak and easy enemies, such as those on earlier challenges. One example is Challenge 3 in Location 1, which is filled to the brim with weak Skeletons.

Austin's ability to produce coins on kills doesn't work on zombies who've turned from killed units and marauders. Additionally, both Sergeant and Undead cannot be exploited for coin farming. Although they can give out coins on their first deaths, any subsequent revives cannot activate Austin's perk. However, it does work on certain zombies that transform into/release other zombies, such as Sapper or Prisoner.

While Austin's perk is undoubtedly great, he isn't a very good ranged unit when it comes to standard mission completion due to his otherwise low stats and lacking other meaningful, combat-oriented special abilities. While his rage cost could favor him as an alternative for when courage is more scarce during a mission, it may not be suitable to replace another more capable ranged unit for this quality alone.

Skirmish[]

In League, a combination of Austin's unique ability being disabled, mediocre performance as a ranged unit, the lack of any useful resistances, and a high cost of 30 make him one of the worst ranged units to use. There is no reason not to pick something else.

Item Sets[]

Due to the aforementioned reasons, Austin is the only unit who cannot find a set that can benefit him meaningfully in any way in a practical perspective. While the Butcher set can be used to earn slightly more coins when farming, the effect is ultimately marginal due to the set's low rarity and how weak the effect actually is compared to his own ability. It is much more effective to equip him with items you usually reserve for another ranged unit during normal gameplay. That way, his stats become more reasonable, allowing him to consistently kill enemies and yield coins while farming. Hunter or Military are good examples of what ranged units would typically come with in general, and they do make accent on improving his fighting prowess, allowing him to yield good results (in terms of income) in absence of other support units.

Skins and Synergies[]

Austin is a part of the following teams: Psychos and Police.

Due to Austin's incompetency as a unit, he is not worth using in all of his teams.

Trivia[]

  • Austin is a parody of Dallas, alias of a major character and career criminal from the Payday series which involves various forms of robberies.
    • Both Austin and Dallas are names for cities in Texas.
  • Before update 2.8.4, Austin was able to generate extra coins on reviving enemies. An undocumented nerf introduced in that update now only allows Austin to get coins from them on the first kill.
    • However, Austin will still produce coins on enemies that turn into other threats if it happens, such as Sapper degrading into an Armored Skeleton, who then could become Dark Skeleton.
  • Before having his perk reworked and switching to a gun with a higher rate of fire, Austin had a different sprite.
  • Austin used to be the only unit in the psycho class to cost courage and be available to use in Skirmish. Currently, he is still the only psycho whose general attributes vary greatly from the Circus Pack units (Saw, Berserker, Queen).
  • Austin, Builder Abby, and Dr. Kane are the only three non-Shooters to possess the High-Rate-of-Fire perk.
  • Austin has the lowest positive charisma stat out of all units at 40.
  • Austin's Police skin, Collector, was originally submitted by Reddit user Nervous_Active_7430 as a skin contest submission, and later one of its numerous winners. It is the first community-created skins to be officially added to the game, though with some design changes from the original.
